Never Reuse PSU Cables: Why Modular Cables Are Not Interchangeable

An NZXT C850 fully modular power supply

Short answer: Only use the cables that came in the box with your power supply. Modular cables are not interchangeable between PSU generations or brands, even when the connectors physically fit. Using the wrong cable can permanently damage the power supply and everything connected to it, and that damage is not covered by warranty.

This is the single most expensive mistake you can make with a modular power supply, and it is easy to make because the connectors at the PSU end look identical across generations. They are not wired identically. Here is what you need to know.

The rule

Use the cables supplied with your specific power supply. They are validated for that unit.

Specifically, the NZXT Gold Core series is not compatible with cables from previous generation C series power supplies. Previous generation units carry a G1 or G2 in their model number, and the physical connectors will mate happily while the pinout does not match.

Improper use of power supply cables can result in severe damage to the power supply and connected components. Any damage caused this way is not covered by NZXT's limited warranty.

If you are unsure which generation you have, read the model number off the label on the PSU itself and check it against your product page, or ask support before plugging anything in.

Why connectors that fit are not the same as compatible

The modular sockets on a power supply are proprietary. Two manufacturers, or two generations from the same manufacturer, can use the same physical connector while assigning different pins to 12V and ground.

Plug in a cable wired for a different pinout and you can put 12V where ground should be. That is not a "might not work" situation, it is a short through whatever is on the other end.

This applies across brands too. A spare cable from an old Corsair or Seasonic unit is not a spare for your NZXT PSU, and the reverse is equally true.

The 12VHPWR adapter cable: what it is and is not for

NZXT 12VHPWR adapter cable
The 12VHPWR adapter is for PA model supplies without a native connector, not a way to add more PCIe 8-pin outputs.

Two things people get wrong here:

  • It cannot be used to add extra PCIe 8-pin (6+2) connectors to any NZXT C Series power supply. That is not what it does.
  • It is only designed for PA model power supplies that do not already have a native 12VHPWR connection. C Series Gold ATX 3.1 units already include a native 12V connector out of the box, so the adapter is unnecessary on those.

If you find yourself wanting more PCIe 8-pin outputs than your PSU provides, the answer is a higher capacity power supply, not an adapter.

Why the C750 Gold Core ships with a 300W 12V-2x6 cable

Because of what it is designed to power. The C750 Gold Core targets builds with a graphics card of 300W Total Board Power or lower, such as the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 Ti or AMD Radeon RX 9070.

For a higher specification GPU, step up to the C850 Gold Core or above. The cable is not the limiting factor being worked around, it is matched to the unit's intended use.

Custom sleeved cables

Custom cables are a genuinely good way to personalise a build, and we do not currently offer custom sleeved cable options for our power supplies.

Third-party options exist. Two things to weigh:

  • We cannot offer direct support for third-party cables.
  • A custom set must be made for your exact PSU model, not just "NZXT". Reputable custom cable makers ask which unit you own for exactly the pinout reason above. If a seller does not ask, that is a warning sign.

Where to get genuine replacement cables

Spare parts including cables, mounting hardware and case panels are on the NZXT Spare Parts Store, and stock is updated as parts become available.

Two limits worth knowing:

  • Parts for End of Life products may be unavailable or very limited.
  • Parts for brand new products can take a while to appear, because warranty claims on new purchases are prioritised.
  • The Spare Parts Store currently ships only within the United States and Canada.

If the part you need is not listed and your product is in warranty from an authorised reseller, contact support about availability.

Frequently asked questions

Can I reuse my old PSU's cables with a new one?

No, unless the manufacturer explicitly states they are compatible. Even the same brand changes pinouts between generations. NZXT Gold Core units are not compatible with cables from previous generation C series supplies.

The connector fits, so is it safe?

No. Fitting tells you nothing about the pinout. This is exactly how power supplies and components get destroyed.

Is damage from the wrong cable covered by warranty?

No. Damage caused by improper or unsupported use of power supply cables is not covered under NZXT's limited warranty.

How do I know which generation my PSU is?

Read the model number from the label on the unit. Previous generation C series units include a G1 or G2 in the model. If in doubt, ask support before connecting anything.

Can I use the 12VHPWR adapter to get another 8-pin connector?

No. It cannot add PCIe 8-pin connectors to any NZXT C Series power supply. It exists only for PA model supplies lacking a native 12VHPWR connection.

Do I need a new PSU for a 12V-2x6 graphics card?

Not necessarily, but you do need the right cable for your unit and enough capacity for the card. The C750 Gold Core is built around GPUs at 300W or below; above that, look at the C850 Gold Core or higher.

Check before you plug in

If you are holding a cable and you are not certain it belongs to your power supply, do not connect it. Send us the PSU model and a photo of the cable and we will tell you. Our team is at NZXT Support.
