NZXT CAM Not Opening or Stuck Loading? How to Fix It

Short answer: Most CAM launch problems come from a corrupted settings file or profile. Close CAM completely, type %AppData% into the Start menu, open the NZXT CAM folder and delete settings.json, then start CAM again. If it still hangs on a white screen or loading bar, rename the whole NZXT CAM folder and do a clean reinstall.

When CAM won't open, sits on a white window or loops on its loading bar, the cause is almost never your hardware. Work through these steps in order and stop when CAM loads.

Step 1: Close CAM completely

CAM keeps running in the background after you close its window, so a stuck copy can block a fresh start. Right-click the CAM icon in the taskbar tray and choose Exit NZXT CAM.

No tray icon or no response from it? Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc and end every NZXT CAM.exe and cam_helper.exe process you see.

Planning to contact support if this doesn't work? Copy the NZXT CAM folder from %AppData% somewhere safe first. The next steps delete files support will ask for.

Step 2: Reset your CAM settings

A white screen or an endless loading bar usually means a corrupted settings file or profile. A JavaScript error at launch can also mean an unsupported version of Windows or a damaged program file. Either way, deleting settings.json is the first fix to try. It resets CAM's settings. CAM builds a fresh one next time it starts.

  1. Press Win + R, type %AppData% and press Enter.
  2. Open the NZXT CAM folder.
  3. Right-click settings.json and choose Delete.
  4. Start CAM again.

Step 3: Start with a clean settings folder

If CAM still won't load, go one level up. In the same %AppData% location, rename the whole NZXT CAM folder to something like NZXT CAM BACKUP, then start CAM. It creates a new folder from scratch.

Renaming beats deleting here. This folder also holds your profiles, so a renamed copy means you can get them back later if you need to.

Step 4: Do a clean reinstall

If a fresh settings folder doesn't fix it, a program file or the updater is likely damaged. Reinstall CAM:

  1. Open Settings, then Apps, then Installed apps. Set Sort by to Name (A to Z) to find NZXT CAM quickly.
  2. Click the three dots next to NZXT CAM and choose Uninstall.
  3. The uninstaller leaves your settings behind, so rename or delete the NZXT CAM folder in %AppData% too.
  4. Restart your PC.
  5. Download the latest version from the NZXT CAM page and install it.

CAM installs to C:\Program Files\NZXT CAM by default. If that folder is still there after uninstalling, delete it before you reinstall. CAM doesn't support Windows 8.1 or older, so on an older system, update Windows first.

CAM opens, but not with Windows

CAM should start by itself when you log in. If it doesn't, your Kraken screen and fan curves fall back to their defaults until you open it by hand. Check these three places:

  • In CAM: click Settings in the bottom-left corner. On the General tab, turn on Start NZXT CAM on Windows startup. Turn on the minimized option too if you don't want the window popping up.
  • In Task Manager: open the Startup apps tab and make sure NZXT CAM is Enabled.
  • In Windows Settings: go to Apps and then Startup. Make sure NZXT CAM is On.

CAM says "GPU driver update required"

This one shows up on Kraken coolers with a screen, as a warning next to the device. It means CAM can't access your graphics driver, either because the driver is out of date or because CAM's graphics renderer isn't compatible with it.

  1. Update your graphics driver to the latest version, including the driver for your CPU's built-in graphics if it has them.
  2. Unplug any extra display devices, such as USB to HDMI adapters or USB info panels.
  3. Still showing? In CAM, click Settings and scroll to the bottom of the General tab. On an older graphics card, switch Graphics API from Vulkan to DirectX 12. On a PC with both built-in and dedicated graphics, switch Graphics Adapter from Low Performance to High Performance.

Frequently asked questions

Will deleting settings.json delete my profiles?

No. Deleting settings.json only resets CAM's app settings. Your lighting and cooling profiles live elsewhere in the NZXT CAM folder, which is why Step 3 renames that folder rather than deleting it.

My profiles reset after a CAM update. Can I get them back?

If update 4.76.0 reset them, yes. In CAM, click Settings, scroll to Settings Backup on the General tab and click Import. Go to %AppData%\NZXT CAM\DataStorage\4.75.7 (or the latest 4.75.x folder, never 4.76.0) and pick the backup file inside, like 4.75.7_backup.json. Anything you changed after the update is undone. Update 4.76.1 fixed the bug.

Why does CAM look blurry?

On NVIDIA graphics cards, the FXAA anti-aliasing setting can blur CAM's text. Exit CAM, open NVIDIA Control Panel and go to Manage 3D settings, then the Program Settings tab. Pick NZXT CAM from the list (click Add if it isn't there), set Antialiasing - FXAA to Off and click Apply.

Does my Kraken keep working while CAM is broken?

Yes. CAM-powered Krakens drop into a default mode with fixed pump and fan speeds and a default screen, so cooling carries on. Fans on a Control Hub are different: they need CAM to be managed. Our guide to whether you need NZXT CAM running covers what each product does without it.

CAM opens but can't see my Kraken. Is that the same problem?

No. That's a detection problem with a different fix. Follow our guide to NZXT CAM not detecting your device.

How do I send my CAM logs to support?

If CAM opens, click Settings and then Support. Tick Send NZXT CAM logs before you submit. If it won't open, go to %AppData%\NZXT CAM (or your NZXT CAM BACKUP folder if you renamed it) and zip up the DataStorage and Logs folders plus migration.json and settings.json. Attach the zip to a request at NZXT Support under Technical Support and CAM Software.

Still stuck?

If CAM won't open after a clean reinstall, send a ticket to NZXT Support with your logs and a screenshot of any error. Logs let the team see what's failing without a round of back and forth.
