Why Is My Graphics Card Whining? Coil Whine Explained

Short answer: That high-pitched buzzing or shrieking from your graphics card is almost certainly coil whine, and it is normal rather than a defect. It comes from copper windings vibrating as current passes through them. It gets louder with higher current, so it is most obvious at very high framerates. Cap your framerate and put the PC on a UPS with power conditioning and it usually improves.

Unboxing a new PC, turning it on and immediately hearing a shrill electrical noise is alarming. The good news is that it is one of the few PC noises that genuinely is not a problem.

What coil whine actually is

Electrical components contain coils. As current passes through one, it creates an electromagnetic field, and that field makes the copper wire inside the coil physically vibrate. Those vibrations are the noise.

On a graphics card it usually comes from the power delivery circuitry.

Most coil whine sits above the range most adults can hear. Younger people and anyone sensitive to high frequencies will often hear it clearly while someone else in the room hears nothing at all. That is not imagination, and it is worth knowing before you spend a weekend swapping parts to chase it.

Is it only new cards?

No. It can happen with any high power draw component, and it is not limited to graphics cards. It is more common on newer hardware simply because power requirements have gone up.

What makes it louder

Two things:

  • More current. The harder the card works, the more audible it gets.
  • Unstable or "dirty" power reaching the power supply. In that case the whine may actually be coming from the PSU rather than the card.

There is a specific scenario that catches people out. Running a stress test, or playing an older game at low settings, can make it much worse. That sounds backwards until you think about it: a lightweight game lets the card render enormous framerates, which means very high current draw. An old title running at 900fps can whine far harder than a modern one running at 90.

Is it dangerous?

No. Coil whine is normal and is not a sign of a defect or of anything about to fail.

It is also not, on its own, grounds for a warranty replacement. Because it is not a defect, it is not covered under the 2-year limited warranty as a reason for replacement.

How to reduce it

Cap your framerate

The most effective fix, and it costs nothing. If a game is rendering far more frames than your monitor can display, those extra frames are pure current draw for no benefit.

Set a sensible frame limit in the game settings or your driver control panel. If your monitor runs at 120Hz, a cap of 240 or 360 is reasonable - high enough not to affect how the game feels, low enough to stop the card sprinting for nothing.

Older and lighter titles are where this matters most, since those are the ones that will happily render four figures of framerate.

Clean up your power

Put a UPS or power conditioner between the wall outlet and the PC. Look for one with power conditioning or voltage regulation and a rating of 1300VA or higher.

When it is not coil whine

Coil whine is a high-pitched electrical buzz or shriek. If what you are hearing is different, look elsewhere:

That last row is a useful test. Coil whine tracks load and framerate. Fan noise tracks temperature and fan speed. Cap your framerate and see which one changes.

Frequently asked questions

Will coil whine damage my graphics card?

No. It is a normal by-product of current passing through a coil and does not indicate wear or imminent failure.

Can I get a replacement card for coil whine?

Not on its own. Because it is not a defect, it is not covered under the 2-year limited warranty as grounds for replacement.

Why can I hear it when nobody else in the room can?

Most coil whine sits at frequencies above what many adults can hear. Hearing sensitivity varies a lot with age, so it is common for one person to find it obvious and another to be unaware of it.

Why is it worse in an old game than a new one?

Because the old game is easier to run, so the card renders far more frames and draws more current. Capping the framerate usually resolves it.

Does coil whine go away over time?

It sometimes becomes less noticeable, but do not count on it. Framerate capping is the reliable fix.

Could it be coming from my power supply?

Yes. Any component with coils can produce it, and unstable incoming power can make the PSU the source. A UPS with power conditioning helps in that case.
