PC WiFi Not Working: How to Fix It

Short answer: If there is no WiFi option at all, power cycle properly first: shut down, flip the PSU switch to O, hold the power button 30 seconds, then leave it 5 minutes. That clears a stuck adapter more often than anything else. If it is still missing, check drivers in Device Manager, then the WLAN AutoConfig service, then your BIOS. If WiFi works but the signal is weak, check the antennas are actually screwed on.

WiFi problems split cleanly into three groups: the adapter is not there at all, it is there but the signal is poor, or the signal is strong and the speed is bad. They have completely different causes, so work out which one you have before you start changing things.

One thing worth saying up front: NZXT support can help with the PC and its hardware, but not with your router, modem or ISP. If the problem turns out to be network side, your ISP is the right call.

Part 1: There is no WiFi option at all

First, confirm your PC actually has WiFi. Not every system does. The clearest sign is whether it has WiFi antennas, or threaded connectors on the rear to attach them.

Motherboard makers usually flag it in the model name with WiFi, AC, AX or WIFI7 on the end, but not always. The reliable check is the model printed on the board itself, or read the board name in NZXT CAM and look it up.

Power cycle properly

This is the most common fix and the most commonly done wrong. A WiFi adapter can get stuck in an invalid hardware state where Windows behaves as though it is simply not there. A normal restart does not clear it.

  1. Shut down the PC, then set the switch on the rear of the power supply to O (off).
  2. Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds.
  3. Leave the PC without power for another 5 minutes.
  4. Set the switch back to I and start the PC.

That drains residual power and resets stuck hardware. Do this before anything more involved.

Check the drivers

After a Windows update or reinstall, the adapter may be detected with no driver installed. Right-click the Start menu and choose Device Manager.

If the device is listed but has no driver, right-click it and choose Update driver, then pick:

  • Search automatically for drivers to use a locally available driver. This fails if none is available.
  • Browse my computer for drivers to point at a driver you downloaded from the adapter or motherboard manufacturer.

Check the WLAN AutoConfig service

Less common, but it happens. WLAN AutoConfig is the service behind all WiFi control in Windows, and a bad update or malware can disable it.

Press Windows + R, type services.msc and press Enter. Find WLAN AutoConfig in the list. It should be Running with startup type Automatic.

If it is not running, right-click it, choose Properties, set startup type to Automatic, and click Start.

If the service is missing entirely or refuses to start, that points at a corrupted Windows install, which means a factory reset or reinstall.

Check the BIOS

This applies only to motherboards with integrated WiFi. If yours uses an add-in card or USB adapter, skip it.

In rare cases the WiFi hardware is disabled in the BIOS. The setting varies a lot between boards, so check your motherboard manual. On the NZXT N7 B550 and N7 B650E it lives under the Advanced tab, in Onboard Devices Configuration, as WAN Radio, and needs to be Enabled.

Part 2: WiFi works but the signal is weak

Windows shows signal strength as bars on the WiFi icon. Four is strong, one or two is weak. Three things drive it.

Check the antennas

The most overlooked step by a distance. Integrated WiFi and add-in cards connect to brass-coloured connectors on the rear of the PC. NZXT antennas come as either a shark fin or a pen style.

Without the antennas attached the signal is severely degraded, giving sudden speed drops, disconnects, or no signal at all. If yours are missing, check the accessory box the PC or parts came in. Generic replacements are widely available if they are genuinely lost.

Check the distance and what is in the way

Realistic indoor ranges:

  • 2.4 GHz: up to about 150 feet (45 metres)
  • 5 GHz: up to about 50 feet (15 metres)

Obstructions cut both down hard. A router in the main house and a PC in an extension means several dense walls in between.

Test close to the router first, then move away, so you know whether distance is actually the variable. If it is:

  • On 5GHz, try 2.4 GHz instead. Slower, but longer range and better through thick walls.
  • Add a wireless repeater between the PC and router.
  • Add a second access point closer to the PC.
  • Move the router, or move the PC.

Check for interference

WiFi runs across channels, usually assigned automatically. In a room with several PCs, a smart TV, consoles and everyone's phone, a device hopping channels looking for signal can knock others off or degrade them.

Those devices do not even have to be on your network. In a flat, neighbouring networks and wireless speakers can saturate the same frequencies. Channel problems are a router and ISP conversation.

Part 3: Strong signal, slow speeds

If the signal is solid and speeds are still poor, the problem is almost never the PC hardware. Common causes:

  • Network saturation. Too many devices on shared resources. Common in dorms and apartment blocks with building-provided internet.
  • Peak hour throttling. In dense areas, ISPs may have limited capacity, so 5pm to 9pm on weekdays can be noticeably slower.
  • Rate limiting. Some plans throttle after a high-speed allowance is used up until the next billing cycle.
  • Router limits. Every additional connected device reduces what is available to each one.
  • Packet loss. Data lost between you and the game or site, causing random disconnects. Run a packet loss test across 3 to 4 different servers for at least 60 seconds each. Small amounts are expected; large amounts mean calling your ISP.
  • Server distance. Connecting to a server on another continent means higher latency regardless of your connection.
  • Malware. Software consuming network resources in the background. Back up what matters and reset the PC.

For nearly all of these the answer is your ISP rather than your hardware.

Frequently asked questions

Why has my WiFi icon disappeared entirely?

Usually a stuck adapter. Do the full power cycle: PSU switch off, hold power 30 seconds, wait 5 minutes. If it is still gone, check Device Manager for a driver problem, then the WLAN AutoConfig service.

Do I need the antennas if I am near the router?

Yes. Without them the signal is badly degraded even at short range, and you get intermittent drops that look like a fault elsewhere.

Should I use 2.4GHz or 5GHz?

5GHz for speed when you are close to the router. 2.4GHz for range and going through thick walls. If you are far away or behind several walls, 2.4GHz is often the better connection despite being slower.

My motherboard name has no WiFi in it. Does it still have WiFi?

Possibly. Manufacturers usually flag it in the name but not consistently. Check the model printed on the board itself, or read it in NZXT CAM and look up the specification.

Why is my ping high when my speed test is fine?

Speed and latency are different things. High ping with good throughput usually means distance to the game server, or packet loss along the route. Run a packet loss test across several servers.

Would a wired connection fix this?

For signal strength and interference problems, yes, completely. For ISP-side throttling or saturation, no. It is a useful diagnostic either way: if ethernet is fine and WiFi is not, the problem is wireless rather than your connection.
